5 Easy Ways to Celebrate Culture Week

5 Awesome Ways to Celebrate Cascadia Day and Cascadia Culture Week!

From the mountains to the sea, our home features some of the most diverse, beautiful and dynamic landscapes in the entire world. Our people are as diverse as the beauty that surrounds us. We are abundantly blessed and therefore celebrate a holiday to highlight our uniqueness and diversity and as a reminder of our responsibility to act as faithful stewards of the wondrous bounty with which we are endowed.

May 18th is ‘Cascadia Day’ – a holiday for all parts of Cascadia which choose to celebrate it. From the Cascadia Subduction Zone to the anniversary of the Mt. St. Helens eruption these events symbolize the fierce potential our region has in carving its own future and the beautiful cycle of rebirth that arrives after powerful, immutable change.

Cascadia Culture Week stretches from the weekend before to the weekend after May 18th, and is used to highlight and celebrate the amazing social and culture that makes this region so unique.

2) Fly your flag & wear your swag!

Celebrating Cascadia Day and Culture week can be as simple as flying your flag in a visible place, or wearing some of your Cascadia swag. Take it to the next step and host a flag waving party, print out & put up posters or reach out to businesses and share in your neighborhood.

Put up your flag or make a poster and put it up in your window at work. Make sure to snap a picture and share.

3) Shop & eat locally.

Use the week as an opportunity to share your favorite local businesses, restaurants, organizations, and businesses to friends and family. Do your shopping at a farmers market, cook meals using local ingredients, and have a great week knowing you are supporting your friends, family, neighborhood, and community, all in way which helps shift our actions to a bioregional model.

4) Volunteer, Get Political, Get Active

Hook in with an amazing cause or organization you feel represents Cascadian values in your neighborhood or city.  Write or call your representatives to see how they feel on Cascadia. Do a bit of research, write a card, give them a call and let them know whether you think they are doing a good job, or bad job – and how they stand about issues you care about.

5) Get Outdoors, Relax, Reflect

Go for a hike, pull some invasive species, plant native plants, and celebrate this amazing bioregion. Go on a Cascadia photoshoot to capture the essence of what Cascadia means to you. Most importantly take some time to relax and think about the things you find important.

About Cascadia Culture Week

Cascadia Culture Week take place every year from the weekend before Cascadia Day (May 18th) to the weekend after.

The first Cascadia Culture Week took place in 2014, and grew out of the need for more time to celebrate, then just one simple day each year. Since the first culture week, it has grown into a time for Cascadians to host barbeques, raise awareness and celebrate this awesome region that we live in, and movement.
